We recently had a chance to talk to Ms. Kristin Oleen, who teaches 4th grade, and asked about her school year so far.  She said, “It is going great! The support from the parents, community, and school have been top-notch!” The reason she loves teaching is because she loves seeing students conquer what they once struggled with. Additionally, she also helps out with whatever the school and others need help with.

We asked about Ms. Oleen’s background.  She said, “I received my Bachelor's Degree from Kansas State University in 2010 and my Masters from Emporia State in 2014.” We also asked about her experience in education.  She said, “I have previously taught first grade and third grade for ten years. I was then an Instructional Coach for five years. While in USD 475, I served as a district trainer for all new teachers entering the district. I credit USD 475 for helping me become the educator I am today. I had many great mentors and principals in my time there. All 15 of my previous years were spent in Geary County Schools.”

We asked about Ms. Oleen's home life.  She said,  “I have lived outside of Dwight on a farm for many years, but I am originally from Herington.” Ms. Oleen also said, “I loved school! I played a lot of sports growing up, and always looked forward to learning and seeing my friends at school. I always want students who are in my room to enjoy learning and enjoy coming to school every day.”  Her family also does a lot of teaching. Her mom, aunts, and Grandma were all teachers. Her Grandma taught at Hope Schools for many years.

We asked why Ms. Oleen decided to teach at White City.  She said she loves the community, and wanted to be closer to her kids, who also attend White City schools. I asked for anything else we should know about her.  She said,  “I love pushing students to achieve their highest potential. I strive to create a supportive, engaging learning environment where every student feels valued, inspired, and empowered to succeed.”  Finally, she tells us that her favorite things to do in her free time are reading and spending time with family.
