Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is the career and technical student organization that focuses on the family. Members use information learned in Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) classes to carry out activities and projects. After kicking off the year with a taco lunch, members began their year by going trick or treating for Care and Share. FCCLA goblins collected canned goods, non-perishable food items, shampoo, soap, toilet tissue, etc. to be donated to less fortunate families throughout Morris County.
Students in FACS classes at White City High School become actively engaged in a variety learning activities. Students in Child Care class discover some of the demands of becoming parents by first wearing the "Empathy Belly" pregnancy simulator, and later by nurturing self-created sandbag babies with light bulb heads for a two week period. Finally, they experience such challenges of parenting as sleepless nights and communication difficulties by playing the role of mommy or daddy to electronic "Real Care Babies". These electronic infants cry throughout the day and night, leaving the parent trying to determine whether they need fed, burped, diapered, or rocked.
Nutrition for Fitness and Wellness is a class designed to address all issues of total wellness. Students are to be continuously carrying out physical, mental, and social wellness activities to help them reach an overall goal they set at the beginning of the school year. Class members also work on wellness projects during class, such as preparing meals to solve a variety of practical problems.
