IDL Room Provides Virtual Field Trip Opportunity

WC Kindergarten Learns About Colors

by Mrs. Stilwell

October 09, 2006

On October 5, our class participated in our first "Virtual Field Trip" via the new IDL (Interactive Distance Learning) technology classroom here at White City Schools. This is a service provided by the Greenbush Education Service Center. The IDL programs are offered throughout the year to all schools who participate. A teacher from the service center greeted us via live TV as we walked into the classroom. We were instantly drawn to the television screens all around us!

Our "field trip" was titled, "Colors All Around Us". This was a supplement to a unit on colors that we had recently finished in the classroom. Each child completed a color wheel and learned what the primary and secondary colors were. Predictions were made on what secondary colors would be made when mixing various primary colors together. The children then "experimented" by mixing each of the colors together by using colored frosting on graham crackers. The students were very excited and proud of their "creations". The program concluded with a book about colors being read to the children while they enjoyed eating their "colorful experiments"! We certainly enjoyed our first "Virtual Field Trip"!

Earlier this fall, on September 26, we celebrated the birthday of Johnny Appleseed with the first grade class. The children enjoyed learning all about apples and the legendary man, John Chapman. Some of the fun activities we did included, sponge painting an apple tree, graphing our favorite way to eat apples, and enjoying warm cinnamon apples! Mmmm, were they good!
