There’s a new group for the middle school and high school students at White City School! During a Counseling Convention in the fall at Emporia State University, Mr. Darrell Scott, father of Rachel Scott from Denver, Colorado was the featured speaker. Rachel Scott was the first student killed in the Columbine High School tragedy on April 20, 1999. Her father, along with her siblings, and many others travel all over the country and abroad trying to reach students with Rachel’s “Challenge”.
Rachel was a very kind and caring person. She treated everyone she met with respect and compassion. Rachel was one that would treat others the way she would want to be treated! Her challenge is to “make a chain reaction by spreading kindness to others”.
Many high school students were interested in having the F.O.R., “Friends of Rachel” group! The high school students were all invited to be a part of this group. We met one time in December and more than two thirds of the high school student body are members! Then, we met with the middle school students and almost ninety percent of the Jr. High students are members! This is SO EXCITING!! The students signed their names to banners pledging that they will “Accept Rachel’s Challenge”!
The Pre-school through fifth grades have been told about Rachel’s Challenge of being kind and caring to others. They helped make hearts and chains to place around the school with the older students. Faculty and staff have also made hearts.
The two F.O.R. groups will be meeting this month of February to continue to focus on what they would like to accomplish the rest of this school year and to make future plans for the next school year. We have many good and exciting ideas to share with one another to make the F.O.R. groups very successful for White City Schools!!
