Welcome to Huskie Country

September 01, 2007

White City is a rural community with an approximate population of 500 people.  Nearly 25% of the population is transient due to the military influence of Fort Riley, located 25 miles to the north.  Originally a farming community, White City is now more aptly described as a "bedroom community" because many residents are employed outside of the community.  Two new housing additions, with new homes still under construction, have spurred growth in our community. The population is primarily Caucasian; however, there is a diverse cultural heritage within the community.  Average income of the community falls in the middle to low socio-economic range.

Education is an important aspect of the community and serves as a vital link to the community.  Parents and patrons are very supportive of all school programs and activities and volunteer to help with many projects.  Community college outreach classes are offered locally by Butler County Community College.  Several community members have taken advantage of this opportunity.  Many of our college-bound juniors and seniors have earned college credit during their high school career.  Nearby are Kansas State University, Emporia State University, Kansas Wesleyan University, and Tabor College.

Located within White City are numerous small businesses including an elevator, lumber yard/hardware store, service station, bank, beauty shop, newspaper, bar and grill, appliance store, auto parts store, mechanic shops, real estate agency, antique dealer, insurance agency, plumber, tire repair shop, "Wreck Center" for all ages, and a laundromat.

Services available in White City include a public library, volunteer fire department, senior citizens' center, senior citizens' housing units, and cable television.  The Morris County Sheriff's Department provides police protection.  Emergency medical services are available through the Morris County Emergency Medical Services in Council Grove.  Mental health services are available through the East Central Mental Health Agency.

There are numerous opportunities to become active in the community through various local organizations including the American Legion & Auxiliary, Extension Units, White City Baseball Association, and other special interest groups and organizations.  PAWS (People Always Willing to Support) is an organization dedicated to promoting school spirit and providing volunteer work in our school.
