The USD 481 Board of Education approved the 2007-2008 school calendar during a regular board meeting on December 12, 2006. Every family will be mailed the calendar and its implications. Two major accomplishments are gained with this calendar: students will be educated 16 additional mornings and teachers will participate in smaller, more frequent inservice. Specifically, they will participate in professional development 2 -4 pm every Wednesday.
Below are more detailed highlights of the changes:
Eliminations
- All day teacher inservices, which currently occur once a month, will be eliminated. We will have school on these days.
- 10am school starts, which currently occur once a month, will be eliminated. We will have school on these mornings
Additions
- 1:45pm school dismissals every Wednesday will be added. Staff will have inservice from 2-4pm on Wednesday each week.
Implications
- Students will gain 16 instructional mornings of education.
- Teachers will learn in 2 hour chunks weekly versus 10 hour chunks monthly.
- Students will be dismissed from school at 1:45pm each Wednesday. High school students will have access to a supervised, quiet study area during this time.
- High school athletic practices will start at 4pm on Wednesdays.*
- Parents and community organizations will need to start planning now for arrangements regarding the supervision and safety of their younger children.**
*Practice may be conducted immediately after school dismissal if the coaching staff is adequate and is comprised of people who do not participate in regular inservice (i.e. Rule 10 coaches who are not teachers).
**Begin making plans that can facilitate your individual needs of supervising younger children (i.e. older siblings, neighbors, community organizations, baby sitters, altered work schedules, etc.)
